About Reddit CryptoCurrency Moons v1
What is r/CryptoCurrency Moons v1 (XMOON)?
r/CryptoCurrency Moons v1 (XMOON) were the initial iteration of Moons (MOON), an ERC-20 token introduced by Reddit in May 2020 to reward users for contributions to the r/CryptoCurrency subreddit. These tokens represented ownership and influence within the community, functioning as part of Reddit's Community Points program.
XMOON tokens had several utilities within the r/CryptoCurrency subreddit:
- Community Reputation – Users could display their Moons balance as a badge, showcasing their contributions to the subreddit.
- Exclusive Features – Moons allowed access to special perks, such as custom badges and animated GIFs in comments.
- Tipping and Transfers – Users could send XMOON to others within the subreddit.
- Governance and Voting Power – Holding Moons provided greater influence in subreddit polls and decisions.
However, because XMOON was on the Rinkeby testnet, it was not supported by external markets and could not be traded or exchanged for real value.
Since XMOON existed only on a testnet, it was replaced by MOON, which was launched on Ethereum’s mainnet. Later, in 2022, Reddit moved MOON to Arbitrum Nova, a Layer-2 scaling solution, to improve transaction efficiency and reduce costs.
The transition from XMOON to MOON involved the following steps:
- Reddit sunsetted XMOON, ending its distribution.
- MOON replaced XMOON, giving users real ownership of their tokens on Ethereum.
- Arbitrum Nova migration further reduced gas fees and improved transaction scalability.
