About Handshake
Handshake (HNS) is a decentralised naming protocol using blockchain to decentralise the root zone file for top-level domain (TLD) ownership. This removes the need for central authorities like ICANN, creating an uncensorable, permissionless environment. Handshake aims to replace the traditional Certificate Authority (CA) system with cryptographic validation managed by network peers. It allows users to register and manage TLDs, host websites, or act as registrars without centralised authorities. Ownership is maintained through biennial "heartbeat transactions," eliminating yearly rental fees. The protocol enhances internet security and privacy using a distributed root of trust. Handshake Coin (HNS), the native currency, facilitates the transfer, registration, and update of internet names, aiming to counter spam and prevent uncontrolled mass registration. Handshake was co-founded by Joseph Poon and Andrew Lee.
Handshake is used to decentralise the domain name registration process and the management of digital certificates. It enables the creation of a globally unique namespace without relying on a central authority such as ICANN. Users can register top-level domains (TLDs) directly on the Handshake blockchain using the native HNS token through a Vickrey auction system. This mechanism aims to prevent price sniping and ensures fair market value determination for domain names. Handshake’s decentralised infrastructure supports provable data sets and leverages a proof-of-work consensus model to maintain security and integrity across the network. Additionally, Handshake Coin (HNS) is the native currency of the protocol, facilitating the transfer, registration, and update of internet names. This currency aims to counter spam, preventing uncontrolled mass registration of names.
